I was born in Ola'a on the big island (Hawai'i), spent my youth in Japan at my father's temple in Shimane Prefecture and served in the US Army. I have a BA in Buddhism from Ryukoku University, an MA in Buddhist Studies from Kyoto University and a doctorate in Education from the University of San Francisco. In 1959 I began my ministry in Hawaii and served at the Hawaii Betsuin, Kona Hongwanji Mission & Ewa Hongwanji Mission. In 1972 I transferred to the mainland and have served at the Sacramento Betsuin, Berkeley, Southern Alameda, White River, Salinas and Monterey Peninsula Buddhist temples. I've taught Buddhism at the Institute of Buddhist Studies in Berkeley and Eastern Religion at California State University in Sacramento. In the mid 90's I served as the Bishop of the Buddhist Churches of Canada. I have been Rimban (head minister) of the Seattle Betsuin Buddhist Temple since January of 2006.
